About GenSys, specialist for modularised systems around large engines

GenSys at a glance

GenSys is a mid-sized plant engineering company from Wismar that plans, designs and produces modularised systems for supplying large engines, in shipbuilding as well as in engine power plants. Since production began in 1997 the company has supplied shipyards, engine manufacturers, the petroleum industry and stationary power plants worldwide.

The product range extends from fuel, lubricating oil and cooling water modules through gas control lines to complete container and offshore energy systems. High standards of quality and conformity are characteristic: all modules are tested on the company's own test bench according to the applicable rules of the classification societies. That same standard passes to every supplier trade, insulation included.

Why GenSys relies on IVS for module insulation

GenSys builds complex, fully assembled modules, densely packed with fittings, valves and plate heat exchangers. Insulating them therefore requires not only expertise but a delicate touch in the tightest of spaces and the ability to survey every module individually and clad it precisely.

For GenSys what counted was a partner who plans, calculates, manufactures and installs the complete insulation system, and who can react to the end customer's short-notice change requests without putting the deadline at risk. Because IVS delivers everything from a single source — from surveying and material calculation through our own sheet metal prefabrication to installation — exactly that was possible.

What we did

A hydrogen module illustrates the process well. The first task was to find the right insulation system for the module, with material and build-up matched to the specific requirement. For that we took measurements on site, planned and calculated the suitable insulation material and assembled the many individual sheet metal parts such a module needs.

The real challenge lay in the confined space: the modules are already fully assembled, with countless installed components, fittings, valves, plate heat exchangers and formed parts. So the work is done in very tight spaces, around every single component. The execution was often multi-part and waterproof, because the final assembly of the modules frequently takes place outdoors. When the end customer requested adjustments to already installed components during the insulation work, we were able to implement them promptly and still keep to the schedule, because everything came from a single source.

The result convinces on three counts: the precisely fitted insulation prevents corrosion under the insulation, it lowers the surface temperature as contact protection and thus reduces the risk of burns, and it acts as noise protection by damping the flow noise of gases and liquids.
