What is thermal insulation?

Technical thermal insulation is the fundamental measure for avoiding energy losses on hot installations, pipework and vessels. It keeps process temperatures stable, protects staff from hot surfaces and is what makes industrial installations economically operable in the first place.

We supply economical insulation thickness calculations in order to meet the occupational safety requirements for surface temperature — otherwise there is a risk of burns and constant heat losses. The insulation thickness is calculated from the medium temperature, the required surface temperature and the ambient conditions: at high temperatures we use high-temperature-resistant insulation materials, at moderate heat you save with thinner layers or mineral wool systems.

Since 1984 we have been insulating product lines, vessels and plant components for industry and plant engineering — from industrial operations, power plants and renewable energy installations through food and chemical production to special installations in shipbuilding. Where is thermal insulation used?

Hot pipework and process lines: steam, hot water, thermal oil and high-temperature lines, on which considerable energy losses occur without professional pipe insulation. Long heating networks in industrial operations and power plants are part of it too. For every run we calculate the economically optimal insulation thickness and deliver the matching insulation in one go.

Vessels, tanks and columns: storage vessels, reactors and distillation columns that have to hold process media at high temperature. Here not only the cylindrical shell surfaces have to be insulated, but also bottoms, lids, manholes and connections, each with its own geometric requirements, which our own stainless steel prefabrication serves precisely.

Heat exchangers and units: plate heat exchangers, boilers, pumps and all plant components that give off heat to their surroundings as hot spots. Consistent insulation of these components noticeably reduces the energy consumption of the entire installation and protects operating staff from the risk of burns.

Food and energy installations: from brewhouses, milk heaters and baking lines through boiler plants to biomass, biogas and solar thermal installations. On-site surveying, industrial insulation to specification and installation by our well-practised teams: everything from a single source.

Insulation materials & products

We use certified insulation materials that suit the temperature class and the application: mineral wool, calcium silicate, rock wool and high-temperature-resistant special insulation materials. For very hot installations we use multi-layer high-temperature systems.

Cladding is done with aluminium, galvanised steel or stainless steel sheet, depending on the environment and the corrosion load. Where required we supply the cladding parts from our own V2A/V4A stainless steel prefabrication, cut ready for installation.

Our execution follows the project-specific requirements as well as the technical rules relevant to the respective system and application.

The choice of material depends on medium temperature, surface temperature and ambient conditions; lambda values form the basis of the insulation thickness calculation. We work with established manufacturers rather than standard goods from wholesale. Data sheets, calculations and certificates are provided on request.
