About Bigadan, the Danish world leader in large biogas plants

Bigadan at a glance

Bigadan is one of the world’s leading specialists for large biogas plants. The Danish company develops, builds and operates plants, from the planning through the complete process engineering to ongoing operation. Its roots go back to 1978; Bigadan was founded as a company in 1982, and the name stands for “Biogas Danmark”. Over more than four decades Bigadan has been involved in building more than 40 plants in 14 countries and is regarded as the Danish pioneer of biogas technology.

At its core, Bigadan is about the circular economy: green gas and nutrient-rich fertiliser are produced from animal and organic residues, above all slurry and waste from food and feed processing. In doing so the company deliberately uses only residues that could not serve as feed or food. Long-term partnerships and high standards of stability and quality are characteristic — requirements that pass directly to every trade it commissions.

Why Bigadan in Aabenraa relies on IVS

The biogas plant built by Bigadan in Aabenraa (German Apenrade) is one of the largest in the world: designed for around 1 million tonnes of bio-waste per year and more than 450 GWh of gas production. On a plant of this size the technology must not fail, not even in a southern Danish winter.

It was therefore clear early on that frost protection is not a secondary trade but co-determines the availability of the entire plant. Bigadan needed a partner who does not just insulate but adapts to every structural peculiarity and manufactures missing components itself. IVS brought exactly that profile: technical insulation with its own sheet metal prefabrication and experience in a harsh industrial environment. In this way a one-off contract became a collaboration lasting several years.

What we did

The task was clearly defined: the sensitive plant technology had to be permanently protected from the cold. This included the insulation of the heat exchangers and, as the central measure, the frost protection insulation of the outer walls of those containers housing the machinery and plant technology.

The real challenge lay in adapting to the site. Hardly any surface was standard: at every point we had to adapt to the structural conditions and the existing profiles and, where necessary, design suitable solutions ourselves. We manufactured the sheet metal profiles required in our own prefabrication; the matching trapezoidal sheets were produced to order and delivered to the site.

When it came to the insulation itself, tightness was what counted. We insulated throughout so that water can run off and sealed everything cleanly, so that no moisture can enter the insulation. Only dry insulation keeps up the frost protection over the years; moisture in the build-up would destroy its effect piece by piece.

The result speaks for itself: the plant technology is reliably protected from the cold and the objective was fully achieved. The project ran over several years and remains to this day one of the largest in the history of IVS.
