Why the WKSB insulator apprenticeship is attractive

The apprenticeship as a thermal, cold, acoustic and fire protection insulator takes three years and combines practical work in the company with theory blocks at vocational school. You learn how technical installations work, which materials are used for which purpose, why a vapour barrier matters and how to fold stainless steel sheet so that it fits to the millimetre. You work with mineral wool, PUR foam, calcium silicate and many other insulation materials, and every day you see raw material turn into a finished, functioning component.

Career prospects are excellent: only a few hundred insulators are trained in Germany each year, while demand in industry, the energy sector and the food industry keeps growing. After the apprenticeship many paths are open, from experienced journeyman through specialist for fire protection or PUR foam to master craftsman or site manager. Pay in industrial insulation is often above the average of many other trades, and thanks to sites all over Germany apprentices learn early on to work independently and take responsibility.
